Zopiclone (Imovane)

Imovane is the brand name for zopiclone, a non-benzodiazepine sedative-hypnotic ("Z-drug"). Much like Ambien, it targets central nervous system receptors to slow down brain activity, but it features a slightly longer duration of action, making it highly effective for both falling asleep and preventing middle-of-the-night awakenings.

Indications & Clinical Use

• Primary Target: Short-term management of severe insomnia, including sleep initiation difficulties, frequent nocturnal awakenings, or early morning awakenings.

• Duration: Prescribed strictly for short intervals—typically 7 to 10 consecutive days (and generally not exceeding 2 to 4 weeks)—to prevent tolerance and physical dependence.

Available Forms & Strengths

Imovane is primarily produced as an oral, film-coated tablet:

• 5 mg tablet: An orange or white round tablet used for lower dose requirements.

• 7.5 mg tablet: An elliptical, scored white tablet. The score line allows the tablet to be split evenly to deliver a 3.75 mg dose.

• Note: Unlike Ambien, Imovane does not feature a specialized, multi-layer extended-release version, because the standard formulation naturally lasts longer in the body.

Dosage & Administration Guidance

• Timing: Must be taken as a single dose immediately before bedtime. It should never be re-administered during the same night.

• Standard Adult Dosing: According to clinical monographs published by Sanofi, the standard adult dose is 7.5 mg at bedtime.

• Special Populations: Elderly patients, individuals with kidney or liver impairment, or those with chronic respiratory insufficiency must use a reduced starting dose of 3.75 mg (capped at a maximum of 5 mg to 7.5 mg depending on regional guidelines) to avoid drug accumulation.

Key Warnings & Side Effects

• The "Bitter Taste": A unique and very common side effect of zopiclone is a noticeable, metallic or bitter taste in the mouth or breath.

• Next-Day Sedation: Because Imovane has a longer half-life than standard Ambien, it carries a prominent risk of next-day drowsiness, impaired alertness, and coordination issues. Drivers must exercise extreme caution.

• Complex Sleep Behaviors: Just like Ambien, users are at risk for dangerous parasomnias—such as sleepwalking, eating, or sleep-driving—while completely unconscious.

• Contraindications: Strictly contraindicated for individuals with severe respiratory failure, severe sleep apnea, myasthenia gravis, or severe liver disease.
